Back to Business

Happy New Year!  On Tuesday, we begin our second semester of VE.  While we’ve certainly accomplished a lot our first five months of school, there is plenty of work ahead.  In addition to operating our business, raising funds for next year, and preparing for our Mock Interview Competition on April 9, we will also have to write an individual business plan.  Writing your individual business plan is your first major project this semester, and will be completed in conjunction with our normal business activity (sales, promotions, weekly newsletter, bulletin board, payroll).

As you can see, there is a lot to do.  You may be asking yourself, “How will we complete all of this work?”  It’s a fair question, and I have a great answer for you.  This week (Tuesday through Friday), we will watch four different videos about how to create measurable, attainable goals that raise your standards in school/business.  Hopefully these videos inspire you to raise the bar in your life outside of school as well.  As you watch these videos, I will stop periodically (every 2 minutes or so) and we will discuss some of the important points you learned during that time.  In addition to our discussion, it is your responsibility to take notes on what you found to be most significant/profound/useful to you.  I call these “nuggets of wisdom,” and you are responsible for at least three nuggets of wisdom per two-minute segment.

By Friday, you will have a list of 60 nuggets of wisdom, which will be your guide to increasing your productivity.  There’s only so much time in the day/week, so you will need to be able to do more as you progress through the year.  Additionally, these videos will help you begin a strategic thought process for creating a solid business plan.  You will have an easy homework assignment on Friday after we finish the last video.  You will complete the homework assignment in an email over the weekend.

The videos will be shown in the following order:

Feel free to check them out in advance and watch them even after we finish this week’s work.  Each time you watch them, you are likely to glean new “nuggets of wisdom.”

The operational tasks we need to complete are as follows:
Weekly Newsletter – HR
Bulletin Board – Admin and CEO
Item of the week + website update to highlight item of the week – IT/Sales
Promotional Flyer for Item of the week – Sales
Payroll, utilities, procurement of inventory, journal updates – Accounting/Finance

Have a great week!  I’ll see you Tuesday.

  1. 1. An area of my life I would like to change is how much nutritious food I eat compared to the junk food, and also how much actual muscle I have.
    2. Some rituals that have lead me to this today is choosing to eat junk food and snack while playing video games or "studying". My rituals also includes not completing a work out plan that I found or doing it half way.
    3. My compelling vision is to grow in muscular strength, endurance, tone, and how much muscle my body has. This would help in golf a little with how far I hit in some places and how much time I can carry that heavy golf bag before getting a little tried and then not caring bout the game so it will end sooner. I want to be able to go practice and play longer before everything seems to get heavy. This would help me as I try to make Texas A&M golf team.
    4. My rituals that i would need to include would be working out fully and completing the workout at hand, I would also need to lay off the sweets and the cokes and foods with a lot of sugars and what not. I would also need to start getting used to the weight of the bag after hours of standing and carrying it around.

  2. 1. An area of my life I want to change is my academics. I want to commit myself to trying harder than I do now.
    2. Rituals that have led me to this is being lazy and electronics. Electronics make a huge impact on me, I have a lot of them and my life evolves around them so I would rather tend to them oppose to something that sets my future. I am also lazy and would rather lay in bed and sleep than just getting the work done and rushing at the last minute to atleast make sure it is halfway done.
    3. My vision is to raise my GPA and my class levels. I would like to have honors or possibly even AP class in the coming school year instead of regular classes. I would like to have better grades than I do now and have better answers than just half answers.
    4. Rituals that I need to set are to commit myself to school and put it before electronics. I don't want to be like peers around me who care more about video games or electronics than school work. Yeah it's fun but that really won't help you in the future. I want to set standards that are above my expectations and succeed higher than the track that I'm currently on.

  3. 1. An area I would like to improve and change in my life would be don't procrastinate with my school work. Also I would like to get stronger.
    2. Some rituals that have led me to this today is being caught up in other things like sports and electronics, or just simply not wanting to do it. So I wait till the last minute and try to get it done.
    3. My vision is to start on a project when I first get it and do it little by little. This will improve my work as well as decrease my stress compared to me stressing to get it done at the last minute. Also I would like to get my whole body stronger. This will greatly improve softball. Getting stronger will help my pitching, throwing, as well as my batting.
    4. My rituals is to put school work first over my electronics and other things. I also will commit to a workout plan. This will help me stay on track and over time improve my strength greatly.

  4. An area of my life that I would like to see change in is my mile timing. I would like to get my mile back to seven minutes and thirty seconds. I have been able to reach this since my freshman year of soccer. I am currently at eight minutes and thirty seconds. Soccer season is starting back up soon, but I had to cancel my gym membership until I found a job. I did however find a job, so as soon as I revieve my first check I plan on getting that back. This is where I am at currently. During my freshman year, I would run everynight after practice. Now I only run once

  5. Or twice a week, if even that. School work and trying to find a job became an excuse for me. A ritual of mine would be pushing homework off until seven or eight at night, which prevented me from going to the gym afterwards. Also, choosing to stay inside in the warmth instead of going outside for less than thirty seconds to go to the gym became another excuse for me. Believing that I would push my lack of running from one week, onto the next week and just double it never worked. In conclusion the rituals of using excuses has prevented me from seeing my vision. My vision is to reach that mile marker on a tred mill or at the Greenway as my timer reads seven minutes and thirty seconds. Rituals that I will begin will include coming home from school and doing my homework immediately. I will then go to the gym and run my mile and do my workouts in time for me to get cleaned up and go to work. This way I can avoid the excuse of being to tired or full from dinner. When soccer conditioning starts I will stop by the gym and run a mile before heading home. Every time I run a mile during my new rituals I will increase my speed steadily. I will even start my weekend mornings off with a mile run in order to avoid the excuse of having plans because I will be able to wake up earlier than my plans are scheduled for. My rituals will lead me to seek my vision.

    1. This is the type of answer I expect from everyone. I especially like how Hayley describes specific rituals that will help her progress from running once or twice a week to running daily. Timing her runs will also help ensure she gets to her goal. If she sets milestones/checkpoints, such as a time of 8:00 by 2/1/15, she'll be even better off.

I suggest laying out a schedule around your school/work assignments and evaluate how well you've stuck with it on a weekly basis. Re-evaluate and revise as needed. Good luck.

  6. 1. An area in my life that I would like to improve upon is my procrastination habit.
    2. Some of tge rituals that have created this habit are simple laziness and me telling myself things like "I'll do it later" over and over.
    3. The vision I have for myself is to work on projects and goals when I get them and be happier overall due to not having a large burden from waiting.
    4. Rituals that can help me make this vision reality are to break down projects and goals into manageable chunks, stop telling myself things like "I'll do it later" over and over, and manage my time so that I don't burden myself and break the cycle I'm working on.

  7. 1. An area in my life that I would like to change is my dedication to schoolwork. In the past, it has always been my main focus but it is starting to drift away.
    2. Some of the rituals that have led me here is spending too much time on the phone, hanging out with friends too often, or telling myself not to worry about it because it has always came easy to me so to speak.
    3. The vision I hope to achieve is living a stress-free academic life with little to no worries about grades, projects, or other assignments. In the afternoons and evening, I will be able to relax and not have the lingering thought of schoolwork in my mind.
    4. I plan on reaching my vision by setting standards for myself and creating new rituals. Schoolwork is going to be the main focus for me as soon as I get home. My phone, TV, and other distractions will be off-limits until all the work is complete that needs to be completed. Once everything is done which is school-related, I will go on about my normal day.

    1. This is a good start. I would suggest having a backup plan in case you ever have a day that prevents you from getting your school work finished right after school.

    1. I think you used the copy/paste function a little too much for this answer.

  9. An aspect of my life I would like to improve at is my grades. A large habit that has put me in this position is that I put other work ahead of my school word. The vision I have for myself is to have all A's. In order to achieve this, I will put school work ahead of extra-curricular activities.

  10. I would like to improve my academics. It appears to my family and I that even though I may have improving grades, they still are not the best they can be. I plan to achieve this goal through studying the night before tests and by working even harder throughout the year.

  11. I would like to improve my lack of money due to the lack of a job. Although I am now 17, i still do not have a job due to the lack of a licence. I plan to get my licence in the next few months and then acquire a job, so that I am able to improve my money insufficiency.

  12. I would like to improve my grades. I would want to get straight a's by the end of my junior year. I also need to stop procrastinating on all my projects and homework. I strive to do all my work on time and get my grades up.

  13. I'd like to stop procrastinating on doing work. I've made my laziness get the better of me and I'm not doing the work the work that needs to be done. I would like tot get to the moment where I'm making A's, B's, and C's. I will get to that point by making myself go home, sit down, and do the work that needs to be done.
